Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a payment system, pioneered and developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI regulated entity. UPI system allows you to instantly transfer money between bank accounts of any two parties.
UPI enables bank account holders (of banks participating in UPI) to send and receive money using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) without entering additional bank information. A VPA is a unique ID, which a user creates by linking their accounts to a bank's mobile application or any UPI based Payment Service Provider (PSP) App like Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM). This address is linked to your mobile number and account number. Since it is not your actual payment address but act as the payment address (bank account details), it is called as the virtual payment address or VPA. Also known as UPI ID, the VPA resembles the email ID. For example, you can have a VPA as ram32@axis or shyam@SBI.
Mobile Personal Identification Number (MPIN) is a 4 digit number which will be generated online on successful registration for mobile banking. It works as a password when you perform any transaction using mobile. It is a 4 digit (6 digits in some banks) secret code similar to the ATM PIN.
The UPI system at present is the best and simplest option of instant fund payment for transactions up to Rs. 1,00,000. Broad comparison is provided below for your understanding.
